The Bible is not out of date: It's right on time!
Scripture we will be looking at today is: John 8:1–11 (KJV)
Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
As we discussed in the last blog, what's going on today has happened before. In today's world, "Cancel culture" reigns supreme. People are publicly shamed, criticized, and condemned for their actions, often without room for redemption. Society is quick to judge, quick to cancel, and slow to offer grace. But this is nothing new. We see the same attitudes in Scripture.
In John 8: 1-11, we read about a woman caught in adultery, and how her accusers sought to condemn her based on the law. They wanted justice. They wanted punishment. But Jesus had a different plan. He didn't condone her sin but offered her something far greater: Grace.
John 8:7 (KJV) says: "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." This moment not only reveals the Heart of God but also shows how God responds to us versus how the world responds to failure.
It's easy to get swept up in the noise of cancel culture. It's everywhere we turn, on social media, in the news, and sometimes even in our own hearts. The world tells us to condemn, to shame, to label people by their mistakes. It's hard not to internalize that pressure and carry it with us. I know that feeling all too well. There have been times when I've fallen short, made mistakes, or even been misunderstood, and the temptation to cancel myself, to hide in shame, has been real. But then I remember Jesus. In John 8, He didn't shame the woman caught in adultery. Instead, He challenged her accusers and extended grace. He didn't ignore the truth, He just didn't let condemnation be the final word.
Sometimes, we forget that grace is available, even when we feel we don't deserve it. Even when we feel as though we've been "cancelled" by our own actions or by others, God's grace says, "I don't cancel you. I redeem you." We are not defined by our failures; we are defined by God's love and forgiveness.
Here's something that I've learned along the way: We are not put on this earth to please our fellow men. We were put here to please God. The opinions of others, the judgment of the world, none of it matters when we know that God's forgiveness and grace are sufficient. When God forgives us, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says. His grace is what defines us, not the world's judgment.
We often let the world dictate our worth and where we stand, but as believers, our position is secure in Christ. Don't let the world's standards shape how you see yourself or how you live your life. You live for God alone. His grace covers you. His love defines you. Your identity is in Him, and that's all that matters.
John 3:16 (KJV)
For God so loved the world that he gave is only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Luke 18:13-14 (KJV)
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
Justified means being made right with God - being saved from sin and eternal separation from Him. Jesus offers us that justification through faith alone.
In order to receive God's forgiveness, you must acknowledge who you are- a sinner in need of His grace, and acknowledge who He is - your Savior, the only One who can forgive you. You must come to Him in faith, trusting that Jesus is the Son of God who died for your sins and rose again.
It's essential to remember that everything we discuss- grace, forgiveness, God's Word, and living for Him- flows from a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Without salvation, the messages of grace and truth lose their transformative power. It's NOT religion; it's a Relationship. Religion is based on works, but a relationship with Jesus is built on faith. Accepting Jesus is the first step in receiving all the blessings and truths we're exploring here. Without Him, we are left searching for answers in all the wrong places.
So, if you desire God's grace today, you must first recognize your need for Him. You are not saved by your own works or your own goodness- you are saved by faith in Christ alone.
Don't let this moment pass you by without making the most important decision of your life.
Here's my encouragement for you:
Cancel culture may define people by their failures, but God defines us by His love and grace. Jesus didn't come to condemn the world; He came to save it (John 3:17). When we mess up, we have a Savior who offers forgiveness, a second chance, and an invitation to live a new life.
Romans 8:1 (KJV) says:
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
So, when the world wants to cancel you or when you feel the sting of judgment, remember that God's grace is greater. He doesn't cancel us-He redeems us. And that is the truth that sets us free.
Live for God. Stand firm in His truth. Don't let the world's fleeting opinions tell you who you are. Through Salvation only, you are God's Child, and His grace is more than enough to cover you.
Let's pray,
Lord, thank You for Your unending grace. When the world wants to judge, help me to remember Your forgiveness. When I am tempted to judge myself or others, remind me of the woman caught in adultery and Your loving response to her. Help me to live for You alone and not be swayed by the world's opinions. May I choose Your grave over shame, and Your truth over judgment.
In Jesus' Name I pray
Amen.
